School councils are established in accordance with the Schools Act, 1997. They include parents, community representatives,
the principal, teacher representatives and student representatives where appropriate. Individual schools hold elections for
their councils but members can also be appointed when necessary. The councils are advisory bodies to principals, with a
focus on student achievement and school development.
Parent involvement and community support are vital to a well-functioning and successful school.
